A 40-BORE JAPANESE TANEGASHIMA MATCHLOCK CARBINE, no visible serial number,
circa 1860, with octagonal 20 1/2in. barrel, each flat with shallow concaved surface (some mild frosting and pitting), the top and top-side flats inlaid with contrasting metal Japanese iconography, offset swollen moulded and carved muzzle, applied fore-sight and standing rear-sight block, side mounted pan with hinged brass cover, border engraved long back-action brass lockplate with external serpentine and mainspring, shaped fruitwood full-stock with white metal and brass carved escutcheons around the apertures for holding the match and pins, further white metal and brass decorative inlays including a rolling cloud design running the full length of the underside of fore-end, guarded ball trigger, moulded heel-plate with comb-guard and bone tipped ramrod (tip loose but present)
